Does reducing file size again or optimizing again damage original PDF?

I have a large number of PDFs that are already in production and have had links added.

I now know that when I reduced them earlier, I should have made them compatible with Acrobat 5 (instead of Acrobat 6).

My question is: to maintain quality, do I need to go back to the original reducing stage or can I safely either optimize or reduce again without compromising file qulaity? Unless necessary, I don't want to return to the stage before adding links.

In Optimizer I see how to adjust the settings to turn off new downsampling and to maintain current compression. WIll that protect the quality of the file? Is that the best route?

If I were to reduce file size instead, is there a way to prevent damage from new compression? I don't see how to adjust whatever it is that Reduce File Size does. Is there a way?
