Hi.
We receive PDF's which eventually have to be submitted to the FDA. Recently I have been getting validation errors about fonts not being embedded. I don't understand the errors because they seem to be telling me conflicting things.
For instance I have a PDF and if i check the fonts tab of the properties page it tells me i have ArialMT as an embedded subset and i also have ArialMT that is not embedded - (i've tried to upload a screenshot to make this more clear but i keep getting an error).
Basically "ArialMT (Embedded Subset)" is listed with some entries underneath, and then also "ArialMT" (suggesting that is is not embedded) is also listed with entries underneath. So I am puzzled. How can the font ArialMT be both embedded and not embedded in the same PDF?
Next i run the preflight profile "List text using non-embedded fonts" and i am getting a lot of matches on the results tab - (in this case 4230 matches in 104 pages).
An example of a match is "ArialMT 9.0 pt TrueType not embedded Gray (ICC) (0.0) overprint: off"
I can drill down and find the place in the PDF - in this case it was the header on page1 - highlighting this text brings up the TouchUp properties window, the original font is ArialMT and the Editing font is Arial.
My main problem is that i have a lot of PDF's that were created by people with limited knowledge of Word and i cannot get hold of the originals, (i know the easiest solution would be to go back to the original word docs and just render them 'properly'.
As it is i have to work with what i have got.
Can anyone explain to me how all these different variations of Arial (ArialMT, ArialNarrow, etc) keep cropping up? I know that these documents will have been written in the default word font (i.e. Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri) and frankly most of the authors wouldn't have known how to change the fonts anyway.
And most of all why i can run the preflight PDF fixup 'Embed Fonts' - and it runs and says all the fonts are successfully embedded. Then i run the check for non-embedded fonts again and i get the same matches as before
So round in a circle. We have been manually editing these PDFs - but it is taking a long time 6 hours to do one! So i need to find a better solution....
Any help would be appreciated.
