Links and mass of open PDF windows/files

I have created a master PDF file in which I have linked pages to other pages and back again.  The general idea is to be able to have a user click on a link, be taken to a page that has the information wanted and then click another link to get back to the page they where they started.  When testing the links, they all work as intended.  The problem though is this leaves multiple open (tiled) PDF pages/windows.  I would like to have the "linked from" page close when the "linked to" page opens - thus keeping the desktop uncluttered and saving active memory.  Adobe Tech Support says this is not possible within Acrobat XI Standard (or Pro), but can probably be accomplished with Java Scripting.  Is this possible and if so what do I need to do to accomplish it?
