Cannot figure out how to attach media (a sound)

I created this project 6 years ago and cannot remember how I did what I did.
I'm going tell you briefly what I do, but the two problems come at the end.

The project has about 500 pages and we've had to add a few more. There are audio controls on each page. The graphic for the controls is part of the page.

In the original project I placed invisible buttons over the graphic buttons and used "Execute a menu item" and the menu item was "Play Media (Acrobat 6 and later Compatible)" and then chose PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, or RESUME as appropriate for the button in the graphic.

My first problem is that this series of command does not seem to exist in Acrobat 9 and X ("Play media..." is not on the list that opens when I use "Execute a menu item") and because of PROBLEM 2 I have not been able to find another to make it work.

PROBLEM 2 - Because of PROBLEM 1, I decided not to start with "Execute Menu Item" and went directly to "Play Media (Acrobat 6 and later Compatible)" HOWEVER when I select that I get the error message "There is no Acrobat 6 and later compatible media attached to this document, therefore an action cannot be created.

QUESTION - How does one "attach media to this document"? I have searched and searched in HELP, in Support, and on this Forum, but cannot find out how to "attach media" to a document.

Help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
JP

I've tried this on both XP and Win7 machines and with Acrobat 9 and X. Exactly the same on either or both.
